The Best Investment You'll Ever Make

Investing has been a passion of mine for a long time. With so many investment options out there—and even more advice—it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But over the course of my investment career. This investment consistently generates the highest return, whether you're measuring financially or otherwise. And that investment is into yourself.

Many financial professionals begin with discussions about portfolio allocation, ensuring your portfolio aligns with your investment timeline and risk tolerance. While those are important considerations, I believe the conversation should start elsewhere. The better question is: How much are you investing in yourself?

Before you start thinking about which stocks to buy or how well you're positioned for retirement, it's critical to take inventory of your environment, as well as your mental, emotional, and physical health. Here's a staggering statistic for you: American businesses lose about $44 billion a year due to lost productivity from depression, according to Dan Buettner's, Blue Zones of Happiness. Yes, you read that right—$44 billion!

What I love about investing in yourself is that it doesn’t require a large upfront cost. In fact, most of the time, it doesn’t require any money at all. Sure, you could splurge on an expensive gym membership or a fancy gluten-free protein shake, but there are countless ways to take care of yourself that cost nothing. You can go for a walk, volunteer at a local charity, invite friends or family over for a home-cooked meal, meditate, or simply unplug and watch the birds. These small actions can pay off massively over time. You’ll start to feel better, look better, and most importantly, make better decisions about your investments.

My two cents: Ask yourself this key question—if you were to analyze your spending habits, how much are you investing back into yourself and the areas that matter most to you? And don’t just ask this once. Continue to check in with yourself regularly. Many people, upon retiring or selling their business, dream of using the proceeds to create a purposeful, healthy life. We need to shift the narrative from "when we retire" to "how can I start today?" Investing in your health and well-being will always yield the highest return on investment. Period.
