Shiny Object Syndrome

Updated: Jul 23

As much as I want to sit here and tell you, you can make millions drop shipping or becoming an influencer overnight and buy that new car you've always wanted, that would be a huge mistake. Please, please, please do not buy some program out there that promises overnight riches. I've seen so much B.S out on the internet these days where people prey on other's because of their financial stress and desperation. Get this through your head: Everyone wants to make more money and feel financially secure. And because people feel stressed and are looking for anything to get themselves out of their current situation, they will throw a lot of time, effort, and money trying to find the solution.

I've always been a big soccer player and runner. When I had a knee injury roughly a year ago, it was only the beginning of a vicious cycle. At first, no big deal. I thought to myself: "Hey, everyone goes through this, it'll only be a couple of weeks before I'm back full strength and running again." A couple weeks came and went and sure enough, my injury did not go away. I saw doctor number 1. Then, doctor number 2. Then a PT. None of them seemed to work. Despite their best efforts to help resolve the issue, nothing seemed to work. Then, I looked online and found this modern medicine place that claimed to heal all. I was in a place of desperation and didn't even think twice about booking an appointment. I paid a lot of money for the "answer," only to be disappointed about a month later. The story has a happy ending because I am starting to heal up and get back to full strength. But what was the answer all along? The one I didn't want to accept and arguably the simplest: Slowing down and easing back into it. Now, you're probably wondering, what does my knee injury have anything to do with personal finance? Well I'm glad you asked. Reflecting on the story has made me realize:

  • When we are in a place of desperation and stress, we will throw a lot of time, effort and ding ding money away to find a solution.

  • When we slow down and ease into new habits (like learning about personal finance), we give our bodies time to process, heal and ultimately sustain. And when we can sustain a habit, that's where the real progress begins.

My two cents: When it comes to personal finance, there is not a destination. This is a process and one that will adapt and change as your life changes. So slow down! Smell the roses. Appreciate everything you have in your life. Dream big and feel confident that even the smallest changes over time can make a world of difference. And one last piece of advice: don't waste your time and money on the get rich schemes.
